Looking Beyond How Running Looks

A Clearer Picture of Your Running

Every runner moves differently. A running biomechanics assessment gives us the opportunity to look more closely at how you run and consider what we see in the context of your training, running history and goals.

High-definition video and 2D running biomechanics analysis allow aspects of your movement to be slowed down, measured and examined in more detail than is possible simply by watching you run.

The findings aren't considered in isolation. They are interpreted alongside you as an individual runner so we can identify what is relevant and whether there are practical areas worth working on.

There isn't one perfect way to run. The aim is to understand how you run, not make you look like somebody else.

Your Running

What Can We Look At?

The assessment can examine a range of running characteristics. No individual measure is automatically considered good or bad; its relevance depends on the runner and the wider picture.

01

Joint Angles

Lower-limb and body positions at relevant stages of your running cycle.

02

Cadence

Your step rate and how it relates to your overall running pattern and pace.

03

Ground Contact Time

How long your foot remains in contact with the ground during each step.

04

Stride Characteristics

How your stride behaves, including foot contact in relation to your body.

05

Movement Patterns

How different areas of your body interact as you move through the running cycle.

06

Running Under Fatigue

How aspects of your running may change as the running element of the assessment progresses.

How It Works

From Running to Practical Feedback

The assessment combines your running history, practical observation, video and objective movement data.

01

Your Running

We discuss your running background, current training, goals and anything you particularly want to understand.

02

Run

Following a dynamic warm-up, you complete a paced running element so your natural movement can be observed and recorded.

03

Analyse

Your high-definition footage is reviewed alongside relevant 2D biomechanics and movement data.

04

Interpret

The findings are put into context and used to develop practical recommendations relevant to your running.

From Assessment to Action

When What You Feel and What We See Are Different

Running analysis can sometimes reveal something that isn't obvious from the runner's own perception of how they move.

One runner I initially met in clinic had a history of persistent knee pain. There had been no obvious sudden increase in running mileage, they had been fitted for their running shoes and clinical assessment showed good range of motion.

The runner also didn't feel that they were overstriding. However, when their running was recorded and the gait cycle broken down, the assessment identified an overstride outside the expected range. This gave us another potentially relevant factor to consider alongside their symptoms, training history and clinical findings.

Slowing the footage down also allowed the runner to see their running differently from how they had perceived it themselves. Rather than simply trying to change their running style, the findings were used to guide a small number of targeted exercises and running drills relevant to what we had observed.

Six months later, the runner reported running without knee pain. The assessment formed part of an individual approach based on the runner's clinical findings, running history and movement analysis.

This is an individual example. Running-related pain is multifactorial, and an observed running characteristic does not necessarily mean it is the cause of someone's symptoms. Individual responses and outcomes will vary.
